Even in professional settings, where a \u201cclean shaven\u201d look was once considered professional and necessary, we are now starting to see more beards in the conference rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the growing trend of full, groomed beards, we thought we\u2019d take a little trip down Memory Lane to review the history of beards &#8211; and how it got us where we are today.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Ancient Beards<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The beard, while considered just a fashion statement today, actually symbolized a lot for men in ancient times:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mesopotamians thought that the longer the beard, the more wise and dignified the man. They also took great care to clean, style, and maintain their beards.<\/li>\n<li>In Ancient Greece, <a href=\"http:\/\/historycooperative.org\/a-short-history-of-beard-styles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a beard was symbol of honor<\/a>. A common punishment in Grecian times was to cut off a man\u2019s beard.<\/li>\n<li>The first barbershops started in Rome around 450 BCE, when it became a symbol of prosperity to have a perfectly-trimmed beard.<\/li>\n<li>Only when Christianity became more popular did men start to shave off their beards, especially when converting to the new religion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>The Middle Ages<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>You\u2019ve seen pictures of Shakespeare and other Victorian nobles during the Middle Ages, so you know their penchant for\u2026 creative beard styles.<\/p>\n<p>During this time, more men experimented with beard products and style, favoring the pointed beards and handlebar mustaches we see often in Renaissance paintings.<\/p>\n<p>Fun fact: <a href=\"https:\/\/curiosity.com\/topics\/men-in-medieval-times-were-serious-about-their-beards-curiosity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Touching another man\u2019s beard<\/a> during this time would mean challenging you to a duel!<\/p>\n<h2><b>Beards in the 19th and 20th Centuries<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2014\/01\/the-rise-and-fall-and-rise-of-facial-hair\/282951\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>The American Journal of Sociology<\/i><\/a><i> <\/i>published a report in 1976 that takes an interesting, in-depth look at the history of facial hair. It turns out that Dwight E. Robinson, an economist, was very interest in \u201cmen\u2019s barbering\u201d around the turn of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p>To see which facial trends occurred between 1842 and 1972, he actually looked at newspaper pictures of men from the <i>Illustrated London News. <\/i>He counted how many times \u201csideburns,\u201d \u201csideburns and mustache,\u201d \u201ca beard,\u201d \u201cmustache alone\u201d and \u201cclean shaven\u201d men appeared in each photo, visualizing them in a chart he published in the <i>Journal.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<h2><b><i>Now that\u2019s commitment.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/h2>\n<p>According to his findings, the beard reached its peak popularity in the period between 1880 and 1890, with a steep decrease in popularity in the 1900s. The mutton chop sideburns and \u201cdirt stache\u201d maintained their popularity during this time, unfortunately.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Modern Day Beards\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>While many \u201cbeard experts\u201d associate the decline of beards in the mid-20th century with war time and the need to find professional jobs, we are seeing increasing popularity today.<\/p>\n<p>Considered a \u201ccounter culture\u201d facial hair style in the mid-60s and 70s, the beard is widely adopted now, even in professional, mainstream circles.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s projected that about <a href=\"http:\/\/historycooperative.org\/a-short-history-of-beard-styles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">55% of males have facial hair all over the world, but women find bearded men 33% less attractive than clean-shaven men<\/a>.
